Scottish patients suffering from chronic pain will soon be able to legally use medical cannabis to treat their symptoms.
The Sapphire Clinic, which already opened a facility in London last summer, is setting foot in Scotland. The new clinic, based in Aberdeen in the north-east of Scotland, will allow patients to consult doctors trained in the use of medical cannabis to treat the symptoms of chronic pain.
We are proud to open the first clinic in Scotland and have already seen first hand how medical cannabis transforms lives. Dr. Mikael Sodergren, the clinic’s managing director, and academic director, told the Scottish Sun. Scottish patients will now have access to renowned experts in the management of their condition. Who also have expertise in medical cannabis.
Sapphire operates under the highest standards of clinical governance so that patients can be confident that any prescription of medical cannabis will be done through a rigorous and safe process. Said Dr. Michael Platt, Sapphire pain specialist.
After decades of banning cannabis, the UK finally legalized medical cannabis in 2018. Doctors can legally prescribe medical cannabis, but health authorities have so far approved only two cannabis-specific medicines. However, these 2 drugs, Sativex and Epidiolex, serve only to treat rare types of multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. Patients seeking broader-spectrum forms of medical cannabis must buy it from private sellers or import it from other countries.
The public health system in the United Kingdom does not cover the cost of purchasing medical cannabis, and many families have found themselves unable to pay for such treatment. A recent survey revealed that 1.4 million residents of the United Kingdom use cannabis for medical reasons.
Does this clinic address this problem? Not really. Dr. Platt told the Scottish Sun that the cost of cannabis might be “slightly higher” in the new clinic, but added that “the patient will have peace of mind knowing that any prescription of medical cannabis will deliver a consistent medical-grade product. They will also have the benefit of having access to a supportive and knowledgeable clinical team.
Sapphire Medical Clinic is currently in the process of finalizing the regulatory steps necessary to open its clinic.
