Louisiana passes a bill recommending medical cannabis for “any condition”. Senators on Wednesday passed legislation to significantly expand the group of patients who can benefit from access to medical cannabis. MPs voted 28 to 6 in favor of an amended version of House Bill 819, which expands the discretion of doctors to recommend cannabis therapy for “any condition” that they “consider debilitating to an individual patient and that they are qualified to treat through their medical education and training”.

Under the current law, physicians cannot recommend cannabis products to patients suffering from a limited number of conditions, such as HIV and cancer.

A handful of states, such as California, Maine, and Virginia, have adopted similar measures allowing doctors to recommend medical cannabis preparations to any patient they believe might benefit from them.

Members of the House have already passed this measure by a vote of 77 to 15. As amended by the Senate, state-accredited dispensaries will be required to “comply with the reporting requirements of the state prescription monitoring program. House Bill 819 is expected to pass on Friday.

Other bills before the Senate include HB 792, which establishes regulations allowing home delivery of medical marijuana products to registered patients, and HB 418, which provides immunity from prosecution to “any facility that is licensed by the Louisiana Department of Health and has patients under its care using medical marijuana. The state legislative session ends at 6pm on Monday, June 1, 2020.

In June 2019, Louisiana legislators approved a measure that allows farmers to start growing hemp. The measure also authorizes and regulates sales of CBD derived from hemp. Louisiana is one of the first three states to have its hemp program approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and now allows commercial cultivation for the first time in 2020.
