Thanks to the agricultural law of 2018 and increased awareness of the benefits of cannabis and hemp consumption, this plant is once again being cultivated nationwide. One of the most important aspects is, of course, the rapid increase in public interest in the various cannabinoids.
Although CBD and THC are the leaders in cannabis research, another compound is slowly making its way into the limelight: CBG, or cannabigerol. Although studies on this cannabinoid are currently limited, it has enormous therapeutic potential. One of the most recent discoveries presents CBG as a potent remedy for shrinking certain tumors.
CBGA was discovered in the 1960s . It turned out that CBGA, the version of CBG that still has its carboxylic acid group and can be found in completely raw cannabis plants, is one of the most important cannabinoids in existence – it is a precursor to all other cannabinoids. It has since been legitimately nicknamed the Mother of all cannabinoids.
Specifically, CBGA (cannabigerol acid) is a direct line to 3 major cannabinoids: tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and cannabichromene acid (CBCA). When exposed to heat or light in a process known as decarboxylation, THCA, CBDA, and CBCA lose their carboxylic acid groups and become THC, CBD, and CBC, respectively. In the case of CBGA, however, certain enzymes break it down and it is immediately converted to THCA, CBDA or CBCA. That’s why more THC means less CBG, because of the unique way these compounds interact and are synthesized.
For this reason, plants that secretly convert to CBG will have their highest cannabigerol content at the beginning of flowering. In most cultivars, if allowed to mature, almost all of the CBG will be converted to other cannabinoids. However, as mentioned above, some strains of hemp naturally produce large amounts of CBG rather than CBD or THC.
A recent press release from Cannabics Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced that preliminary results show that CBG has greater anti-tumor effects than CBGA, the acid in cannabigerol. Specifically, CBG prove to have an impact on the human stomach and bone cancer cell lines.
According to the study, “the HTS platform used to examine the necrotic effects of CBG and CBGA on various types of cancer cell lines. It is interesting to note that the CBG induced necrotic effects while the CBGA did not. These results support the company’s previous research, which has consistently demonstrated differential anti-tumor effects when using various cannabinoids on human cancer cells from both fresh biopsies and cell lines.
This discovery could open the door for Cannabics Pharmaceuticals to organize additional research efforts, as well as possibly offer personalized cannabinoid therapy to patients in the future.
The company’s head of cannabidiol research, said, “CBG has been attracting a great deal of interest in the scientific community for some time because of its potential therapeutic properties. Recent preliminary results from our research team illustrate how purified cannabinoids can potentially produce anti-tumor activity and allow us to examine the surrounding effect of botanical extracts versus purified compounds. We are excited about these preliminary results and plan to conduct further experiments shortly to further support them.
Other benefits of GBC
In addition to its anti-tumor properties, CBG has many other potential medical benefits. Generally , various studies on this cannabinoid revealed its ability to be usable as a neuroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound. Limited research also suggests that it can effectively treat gastrointestinal disorders and glaucoma.
A 2008 study found that CBG is beneficial in the treatment of MRSA because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Its neuroprotective properties, mentioned above, may help people with Huntington’s disease, while other research has examined its potential to treat bladder dysfunction.
CBG is also a safe and effective antidepressant and its effects mimic those of SSRI drugs. It is also clear that CBG may stimulate the production of the endocannabinoid Anandamide, which naturally increases dopamine levels and regulates various functions such as sleep, mood, and appetite.
