Menstrual pain is a common problem affecting a large percentage of women of childbearing age. There are many remedies for pain relief that do not involve the use of medication. Cannabis is one of them.

In a previous article, we talked about several scientific studies stating that cannabinoids found in marijuana help fight endometriosis. Today we will focus on the pain that many women experience during their periods. Current statistics indicate that 75% of women under the age of 25 fight PMS. And between 25% to 50% of these women do so from the age of 25 to the onset of menopause. Most of them turn to anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers to cope with the pain and distressing symptoms. However, frequent use of medications such as ibuprofen could have several negative health consequences, such as an imbalance in the intestinal flora, which is responsible for many health problems. Cannabis is a useful natural remedy to avoid the abusive use of drugs and may help to relieve menstrual pain.

Why is menstruation so painful?

Many women suffer from dysmenorrhea, which is pain caused by muscle spasms in the womb during menstruation. Abdominal pain, back pain, diarrhea, headaches, and cramps are among the most common and painful symptoms.

There are two types of dysmenorrhea, each with its causes and consequences:

  • Primary dysmenorrhea: this is the most common menstrual cramp and not caused by any other health problem. It is caused by a chemical called prostaglandin that produces contractions to help the uterus remove the lining that has built up during the menstrual cycle. If fertilization does not take place, the lining of the uterus, which is rich in blood, is removed because it is no longer needed. The pain caused by primary dysmenorrhea usually starts at a very young age and sometimes disappears after childbirth.
  • Secondary dysmenorrhea:  It affects females above the age of 30, caused by a disease like endometriosis.

Can cannabis help relieve menstrual pain?

According to some studies, an appropriate dosage of cannabinoids may relieve pain through interaction with receptors in the endocannabinoid system. Research shows that women suffering from menstrual cramps could greatly benefit from marijuana to treat both types of dysmenorrhea. Cannabis use and the relief of menstrual pain are linkable due to the high concentration of endocannabinoid receptors in the uterus and its lining.
