Cannabidiol oil may help to treat menopausal symptoms. The researchers have considered other herbal and natural treatments, but have not yet proven their effectiveness.
In fact, cannabidiol (CBD) has attracted a lot of interest. In June 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of a specific cannabidiol-based product, CBD, to treat two specific types of epilepsy.
Research has suggested that CBD may have other health benefits. Ranging from pain relief to treatment of depression and anxiety, and even reduction of menopausal symptoms.
CBD is one of many substances found in marijuana. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another cannabinoid, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not cause a high level that people generally associate with marijuana.
For this reason, it is legal to sell and consume CBD in some countries.
Is CBD oil effective during menopause?
CBD can affect the body in different ways to reduce menopausal symptoms. In particular interest is how it interacts with cannabinoid receptors.
How do cannabinoid receptors work?
The endocannabinoid system interacts with chemical messengers, including CBD.
Also, researchers believe that this system plays an essential role in many body functions and other aspects of health, including:
- mood regulation
- immune functions
- fertility and reproduction
- temperature control
One theory is that a poorly functioning endocannabinoid system can lead to several health problems. Handling the chemicals involved in the system, such as CBD, could potentially help to address such conditions.
Menopause appears to disrupt the endocannabinoid system, and cannabinoid receptors exist throughout the female reproductive system. It is, therefore, possible that CBD oil may reduce some of the symptoms associated with menopause.
What menopausal symptoms can CBD treat?
Although there is no evidence that CBD oil affects all menopausal symptoms, it may be useful in the following cases:
- Mood changes
- One of the most common symptoms of menopause is mood swings.
- A 2010 study in mice showed that CBD works similarly to antidepressants in the brain and reduces depression symptoms.
- CBD may also help to stabilize mood in men.
- Sleep disturbances
Another, case study conducted in 2016 on a person with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) showed that CBD oil was able to reduce sleep disorders and anxiety.
CBD oil may also be useful in the treatment of sleep disorders related to menopause.
Loss of bone density
Low bone density can increase the risk of fractures or bruises. It is, therefore, an important symptom to treat.
Some research has shown that CBD interacts with a cannabinoid receptor that can play a role in bone density loss. CBD may, therefore, be able to reduce the rate of bone density loss that can occur during menopause.
At present, there is very little reliable evidence to suggest that CBD oil can treat menopausal symptoms. Researchers have just begun to understand how the endocannabinoid system works and its possible role in different health conditions.
Future research in this area will be needed to directly test the theories about the role of the CBD in menopause. It will then be possible to determine whether or not CBD oil could help reduce menopausal symptoms.
