Fragile X syndrome, or “Martin Bell syndrome”, is an inherited disorder that causes symptoms similar to the autism spectrum and, in many cases, also leads to mental developmental disorders.
Fragile X syndrome is the most common hereditary cause of autism and mental retardation. To date, despite the efforts of pharmaceutical companies, there is still no approved drug for treatment. A new study suggests that (CBD) treatment may be effective for people with the syndrome.
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a dominant X-related disorder caused by a mutation in the mental retardation of Fragile X. (CBD) is an exogenous Phyto cannabinoid with therapeutic potential for people with anxiety, sleep disorders and cognitive deficits, as well as for populations suffering from endocannabinoid deficiencies, such as FXS (a genetic disease caused by an X chromosome mutation). So,the objective of this study was to provide a brief narrative review of the recent literature on endocannabinoids and FXS and to present a series of cases describing three patients with FXS who were treated orally.
In fact, this study reveals the importance of exploring the therapeutic potential of CBD in the context of rigorous clinical trials.
Patients in the study received oral CBD solutions of 32 to 63.9 mg . In 2 of the patients, symptoms worsened after discontinuation of CBD and further improved after the resumption of treatment.
The three patients described in the case series had functional benefits following the use of oral CBD solutions, including significant reductions in social exclusion and anxiety, as well as improved sleep, nutrition, motor coordination, language skills, and sensory processing. Two of the patients described had a re-emergence of several FXS symptoms after discontinuation of treatment.
Instead, drug therapy aims to reduce secondary symptoms of the disease, such as self-harm, aggression, depression, and anxiety and includes mainly antidepressants and antipsychotics.
“Previous studies have shown that many of the abnormal symptoms of Fragile X syndrome are due to a lack of regulation of the endocannabinoid system and reduced stimulation of their receptors due to a lack of natural endocannabinoids to bind to them. Also,Studies have shown that CBD consumption increases levels of endocannabinoid anandamide and AG-2, thereby reducing or even neutralizing one of the biological mechanisms of abnormal cell function in Fragile X syndrome. “
Although many drugs have been developed to target specific systems (GABA agonists), CBD has the potential to produce a multifaceted effect for people with FXS because of its multiple benefits and mechanisms of action.
