A study published last month suggests that CBD may help slow the breakdown of brain cells.
The study, entitled “Neuroprotective effect of cannabidiol against hydrogen peroxide in cultured hippocampal neurons,” investigated the potential neuroprotective and neurotoxic effects of CBD in vitro.
The researchers specifically studied the efficacy of CBD against the neurotoxicity of oxidative stress, a type of aggression of cell constituents involved in the development of cancers, strokes or neurodegenerative diseases.
Although CBD showed neurotoxic and neuroprotective effects on hippocampal neurons in an in vitro context, the use of CBD in low concentrations, which did not cause toxic effects on neurons, significantly preserved neurons from oxidative stress (H2O2), confirming its neuroprotective abilities,” notes the study report.
The study acknowledges its limitations and calls for further research. However, in vitro results seem to confirm the neuroprotective potential of CBD. “The biological modes of action of CBD on neurons have not been fully elucidated, but our work has confirmed that CBD is highly effective in neutralizing H2O2-induced neurotoxicity on primary hippocampal neurons, which is intimately involved in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases” such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), wrote the authors of the study.
They noted that further research should investigate the effects of CBD from its various methods of administration, including “ingestion, inhalation, and transdermal or topical administration”.
