Within the framework of the agricultural ordinance package 2020, Switzerland has officially authorized hemp varieties with a THC content of <1%, which are not listed in the EU catalog of hemp varieties, as of January 1, 2021.

In addition to no longer limiting hemp to certain varieties, seeds and seedlings of all hemp varieties with a THC content of <1% will be freely marketable in commercial agricultural cultivation and productive horticulture without any prior variety approval procedure.

The obligation to declare the cultivation of hemp in certain cantons is not affected by these changes and will be maintained after January 1. All other legislation on hemp, on its agricultural production or its use as animal feed, will remain unchanged.

The Hemp Community of Interest (CI Hemp), the driving force behind this decision, “warmly welcomes the changes mentioned. They represent an important step in the development and consolidation of Switzerland’s pioneering role in the field of Cannabis.
