The new rule comes into effect more than a year after the US state has approved the medicinal use of cannabis .

Four years after Florida voters approved the legalization of medical marijuana, the state Department of Health  gave the green light to sell the substance in edible products, which must indicate that they contain THC, the psychoactive ingredient in this drug.

From August 27, 2020, food products can be administered to patients with medical marijuana (MMJ),” the Florida Compassionate Care Center wrote on its website Friday.

After a long wait, MMJ patients in Florida are finally shopping!”  Noted the medical organization.

Some dispensaries include jellies, baked goods, chocolates, and powdered beverages.

Under state law, the authority that can issue food permits to Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTC) is the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS).

The latter authority writes on its website that edibles are defined by Florida law as foods made with marijuana oil, but not with another form of marijuana.

Florida Governor Ron de Santis enacted a law in March 2019 abolishing the state ban on smoking medical marijuana.

In Florida, its therapeutic use went into effect in January 2017 after a referendum approved in 2016 by over 71% of voters.

However, it is good for patients to know that while cannabis groceries are legal, it will take a while before a wide variety of options are available,”noted the Center for Compassionate Care.

As for the composition of the products, individual servings should not contain more than 10 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and multiple servings no more than 200 milligrams, the Center detailed. Also, the wrappers must not be decorated with specks or trimmings of any kind or be “too colorful” so that children will not mistake them for sweets.
