Medical cannabis is now available free of charge in Sicily after a decree signed in late January by the Sicilian Health Minister, Ruggero Razza.

The cost of cannabis delivered by prescription to patients suffering from very specific pathologies (chronic pain, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis) will be covered by the Sicilian regional government.

The use of cannabis for medical purposes is legal in Italy since 2013. With cannabis generally paid for by the patient. Cannabis is available as medicine by licensed pharmacies. Which obtain their supplies either from the Italian military or through imports from licit producers.

In 2019, Aurora Cannabis won a tender to supply medical cannabis to Italy in small quantities. As it is responsible for supplying the country with a minimum of 400 kg over a two-year contract.

Self-cultivation remains illegal and punishable by imprisonment. It is in fact widely acceptable, particularly in southern Italy, and especially when used for medical purposes. Last December, for example, the Italian Supreme Court cleared a self-cultivator who produces for his personal use.

Possession of cannabis is decriminalized in Italy and remains punishable by a fine and the suspension of your driving license.

Last year, light cannabis almost became legal , as a bill to that effect rejected by the Italian Senate at the last moment.
