A new wellness trend within the world of CBD products is the use of CBD oils made with turmeric. Turmeric hails from the ginger family of plants, and while you might be more familiar with it as a spice used in various curries, it also has a long history of being used in traditional medicine systems due to its healing power.

Coupled with the many and varied health benefits of CBD, turmeric CBD oils are a powerful combination that can provide users with relief against many different manners of ailments. Turmeric CBD oil’s benefits include a reduction in risk of heart disease, relief from anxiety and depression, and less pain from chronic conditions. It’s even been shown to be an effective aid to cancer treatments. So how exactly does it work?

What is turmeric?

Turmeric, AKA the Curcuma longa, is a flowering plant within the ginger family, commonly used as a spice in several different Asian cuisines. It has also historically been used in traditional medicines, most notably in the 3,000-year-old Ayurvedic medicine system originating in India.

Turmeric is renowned for its various healing properties, holding over a hundred different chemical compounds each with their own benefits. The most important of these is curcumin, the compound which gives turmeric its distinctive yellow color.

Benefits of curcumin

Curcumin is a type of curcuminoid, and like other curcuminoids, the ways that it reacts within the body can have a number of healing effects. Its primary benefits are that it operates as both a powerful anti-inflammatory and a strong antioxidant, helping to reduce the harm that inflammation and oxidative damage can do to the body. It also offers a number of other health benefits.

It can reduce the risk of heart disease

Excess inflammation and oxidative damage can play a key role in the development of heart disease, meaning curcumin’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can help to reduce the risk of heart disease.

More importantly, however, curcumin improves the function of the endothelium, the lining that surrounds your blood vessels. Endothelial dysfunction is a major factor in the development of heart disease, lessening your body’s ability to regulate important functions such as blood clotting and blood pressure.

A number of studies have found that curcumin enhances endothelial function; one review even found that it was more effective in regulating endothelial function than atorvastatin, a medicine commonly used to treat heart disease by reducing cholesterol production.

It can treat cancer

Another incredible property of curcumin is the way it interacts with cancerous cells and tumors. Curcumin has been shown to contribute to the death of cancerous cells by regulating multiple cell signaling pathways, helping your body to identify and selectively kill off cancer cells.

Curcumin also helps to reduce angiogenesis – the process of creating new blood vessels – within tumors, starving them of the blood supply they need in order to grow and spread.

Curcumin can treat the symptoms of cancer too, as its anti-inflammatory properties can provide pain relief to cancer patients.

It can treat mental conditions like anxiety and depression

Curcumin has the potential to improve a number of different mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression thanks to its promotion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF is essentially a growth hormone for the brain, stimulating the formation of new neuron connections and helping neurons to multiply in certain parts of the brain.

BDNF is thus an important part of regulating the brain, and BDNF deficiencies play an important role in mental conditions such as anxiety and depression. By boosting BDNF levels, curcumin can act as a supportive treatment for these conditions.

A 2006 review found that while chronic stress can cause reductions in BDNF which lead to neurological conditions like anxiety, regular curcumin use blocks these stress-induced decreases in BDNF, thus providing supportive treatment for stress-induced mental conditions.

Why pair CBD oil and turmeric?

To boost the healing properties of turmeric even further, there are now a number of supplements that blend turmeric with CBD, a cannabinoid compound extracted from the hemp plant. One reason for this is simply that CBD offers a whole host of health benefits itself, including reducing anxiety, relieving pain from chronic conditions, and promoting healthier sleep.

Another reason is that both CBD and curcumin have low bioavailability, meaning they’re hard for the body to absorb and process on their own. They also happen to both be lipophilic, which means they tend to be absorbed best through fat. Because of this, they both work best when combined with oil and placed under the tongue to be absorbed by the sublingual veins.

Because the most efficient delivery mechanism is the same for the two compounds, it makes sense to blend CBD and turmeric into a single product.

Turmeric can boost the effects of CBD (and vice versa)

CBD and turmeric share a few health properties, such as both being strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Because of this, taking both at once can make these properties even more effective.

Another reason that CBD and turmeric can boost each other’s effects is that they treat a number of the same conditions but in different ways. For example, as discussed above, the curcumin in turmeric can help to fight anxiety by boosting BDNF levels.

CBD, meanwhile, also helps with anxiety but does so by reducing levels of cortisol, the stress hormone which regulates our fight-or-flight responses and which can build-up due to chronic stress and result in anxiety.

By working together to alleviate different causes of the same conditions, turmeric CBD oil can be much more effective than taking each on their own.

Turmeric CBD oil can boost the immune system

Both CBD and turmeric can benefit your immune system greatly. As well as being natural anti-inflammatories, helping to reduce tissue damage within the body that may affect your immune responses.

They also have their own specific immune system benefits – turmeric is naturally antibiotic, antimicrobial, and antifungal, helping to eliminate pathogens within the body; and CBD can act as a modulator for your body’s immune response, which can be especially helpful for those with autoimmune conditions.

Turmeric CBD oil can improve brain function

As stated above, the curcumin in turmeric can have positive effects on the brain due to its stimulation of BDNF., helping to fight off mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. However, the two also have a remarkable effect in treating neurodegenerative diseases.

This again ties into their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as oxidative damage and excess inflammation play a key part in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Turmeric also helps to clear buildups of proteins known as amyloid plaques, another factor in diseases like Alzheimer’s.

CBD, meanwhile, helps to avoid the risk of these conditions by helping to regulate your sleep cycle – lack of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, so by promoting healthy sleep patterns CBD can help to reduce the risk of these conditions developing.

Turmeric CBD oil can reduce aches and sores

Yet another benefit of the combined antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric and CBD is that they can help to fight aches and sores associated with chronic conditions like arthritis and eczema. Combining the two into a single supplement increases this benefit even further.

Benefits of Turmeric CBD oil

As well as the benefits discussed above, turmeric CBD oil can contribute to your health and wellness in a number of other ways. The following is a summary of some of the biggest benefits of regular turmeric CBD oil use as part of a dietary supplement program.

CBD Turmeric Oil

Acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory

Both CBD and the curcumin found in turmeric have powerful anti-inflammatory effects. CBD does this by inhibiting the production of the COX2 enzyme, a key factor in inflammation; meanwhile, curcumin blocks NF-kB molecules which activate genes related to inflammation in the nuclei of cells. Many of the benefits of turmeric CBD oil stem from this anti-inflammatory effect.

Relieves symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues

This has been discussed above, but to recap, turmeric CBD oil can help to alleviate mental health conditions in a number of ways:

  • The curcumin in CBD boosts BDNF production, helping to keep your brain healthy, relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease
  • CBD inhibits cortisol production, reducing feelings of stress and relieving the symptoms of anxiety
  • CBD helps facilitate better sleeping patterns, regulating REM sleep to maintain healthy brain function and avoid neurodegenerative diseases

Alleviating pain and helping wounds to heal

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of CBD and turmeric combine to provide effective pain relief, from either specific injuries or from chronic conditions such as arthritis. In addition, the curcumin and other compounds found in turmeric can promote tissue and collagen growth, helping smaller cuts and wounds to heal faster.

Improves digestion

Turmeric and CDB both have benefits for digestive health – both of them reduce inflammation in the gut, and turmeric has also shown promise in improving gut permeability. The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric CBD oil can be especially helpful in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Lowers chances of heart and brain failure

Turmeric CBD oil can help to maintain healthy brain and heart function. For the heart, both turmeric and CBD have powerful anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce the risk of heart attacks.

Turmeric also helps to improve endothelial function and allows better regulation of blood pressure and blood clotting. CBD can also help diabetes sufferers – along with other cannabinoids, it can help to lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin production.

In terms of your brain, turmeric CBD oil acts as a regulator for various hormones in order to keep your brain healthy and treat the effects of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Turmeric increases BDNF production to promote healthy neuron development, while CBD can regulate stress hormones to avoid chronic stress-induced issues in the brain.

Is turmeric CBD oil safe? Potential side effects

While turmeric CBD oil can help to improve your health in a number of ways, there are also some potential side effects. Before you start taking these supplements, you should consult a health professional to make sure you aren’t susceptible to any side effects.

CBD can result in nausea in some cases if your digestive system doesn’t process it well. This could be caused by the CBD itself, or another ingredient in the supplement may be the cause. This stems partly from CBD being unregulated – there are no guidelines set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the contents of a CBD oil or CBD tincture, so their ingredients can vary widely.

Turmeric may also cause nausea, although this is less likely, and will be fairly mild if it does occur.

CBD oil is often taken to treat headaches and migraines, but in some cases, it may actually cause them. This is generally the result of the oil rather than the CBD, as it may contain solvents such as ethanol or isopropanol which can have adverse effects. If you experience headaches, try switching to a different CBD product with different ingredients.

CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which regulates various bodily functions. Because ECS receptors are present in your saliva glands, CBD may cause a dry mouth by slowing saliva production.

CBD and turmeric can both cause diarrhea in some people. While this is unlikely, reducing your dosage is an easy fix if turmeric CBD oil does give you diarrhea.

Blood thinning

Both turmeric and CBD can act as blood thinners due to their interactions with various hormones and enzymes within the body. Because of this, if you already take blood thinning medication, you should NOT use turmeric CBD oils unless a health professional advises you otherwise.

Turmeric and CBD oil is a great combination

When combined into one product, turmeric and CBD can be an extremely potent duo providing health benefits from pain relief to improved brain function and even treatment of cancer. Traditions like Ayurvedic medicine have used turmeric for millennia, and as more research emerges, it’s clear that it’s stood the test of time.
