Out of the many ways to enjoy CBD, gummies are an increasingly popular method. They’re bite-sized, easy to take, discrete, and often have longer-lasting effects than other forms of CBD such as tinctures or vapes.

One of the most commonly-asked questions about gummies is how many you should take. The issue is that there’s no one-size-fits-all dosage – the right dosage can vary greatly based on a number of factors, such as body weight, metabolism, and the desired effect you want to gain from CBD gummies.

CBD gummies usually contain roughly 10mg of CBD per gummy, which makes measuring doses fairly easy, but working out what dose you should take can be more complicated. This guide will cover everything you need to know in order to work out your ideal dosage and how many gummies you should take to meet it.

What are CBD Gummies?

CBD infused gummies are a form of CBD edible – in other words, food or drink containing CBD. They can either be bought ready-made or can be made at home using fairly simple recipes that mix fruit juice, gelatin, and CBD oil.

Like other edibles, CBD gummies are a quick and easy way of enjoying CBD, as all you need to do is eat them and wait for the effects to kick in. Compared to other forms of CBD like tinctures or vapes, CBD gummies take longer to take effect but also result in a much more prolonged effect. This is down to the way the body processes them.

While vapes and smokable CBD work by allowing CBD to rapidly enter the bloodstream through the lungs, and CBD tinctures enter the bloodstream through sublingual veins under the tongue, CBD gummies and other edibles deliver CBD to the body via the digestive system.

It takes much longer for CBD to be processed by the body in this way, which means that it takes longer to initially take effect and the effects also last much longer as the CBD content of the edible is gradually released through digestion.

As the CBD is released, it begins to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that help to regulate physiological and cognitive functions like mood, sleep cycles, and pain response in order to maintain homeostasis. CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the ECS to produce its unique effects and potential health benefits.

Health Benefits of Taking CBD Gummies

CBD gummies can deliver a whole host of different health benefits as a result of CBD’s interaction with the ECS. Research into the exact effects of CBD is unfortunately still in its infancy, but current studies have so far shown promising results in a number of areas.

Anxiety relief

CBD has been shown to be a useful anxiolytic (anxiety reliever) in a variety of trials and studies, partly thanks to its ability to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. For example, a 2015 review concluded that CBD has strong potential as a treatment for a range of anxiety-related disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, OCD, and PTSD.

Potential Immune Support Vs Acne

One of the major factors that cause acne is the overproduction of sebum, a waxy, oily substance produced by the skin to protect it. Excess sebum can clog pores, causing acne. A 2014 study found that CBD can help to stop sebocytes (the cells involved in sebum production) from creating too much sebum, helping to reduce acne.

Anti-Inflammatory

As with many cannabinoids, CBD can act as an anti-inflammatory, helping to regulate inflammatory responses through its interactions with the ECS. The anti-inflammatory effect of CBD has many uses – it can help relieve pain, ease chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis, and prevent cell and tissue damage within major organs.

Better Sleep

While CBD itself does not make you sleepy or drowsy, it can help to facilitate better sleep through a variety of mechanisms. As mentioned above, it can relieve anxiety and pain, which can be major obstacles to healthy sleep. It can also create a general calming, relaxing sensation.

However, the dosage is very important if you are taking CBD for sleep. While higher doses of CBD can create a calming, relaxing effect, lower doses can actually act as something of a stimulant, creating a sense of greater focus and alertness. If you’re taking CBD gummies to help with sleep, you should therefore try higher doses.

More Energy/Focus

The benefits of CBD for energy and focus largely tie into its effects on sleep, as discussed above. Lower doses of CBD can directly create a sense of focus and alertness, but other effects of CBD also indirectly contribute to greater energy and focus as well.

By facilitating better sleep, CBD can help reduce feelings of fatigue or tiredness during the day. Similarly, anxiety can often cause symptoms of fatigue or difficulty concentrating; by acting as an anxiolytic, CDB can decrease these symptoms.

Mood Booster

CBD can act to enhance the effects of anandamide, often called a bliss chemical or a natural antidepressant due to the fact that it contributes to a positive mood and reduces anxiety and stress. CBD blocks anandamide from binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS, meaning it degrades slower and remains in action in the brain for longer, enhancing its mood-boosting effects.

Pain Relief

CBD has been noted to have analgesic (pain-relieving) properties in a number of studies. This is partly linked to its anti-inflammatory effects – by reducing inflammation, CBD helps to reduce the pain that inflammatory conditions cause. In particular, CBD may be helpful in relieving chronic pain from conditions like arthritis.

Finding The Correct CBD Dosage For You

Thanks to the limited research into CBD doses, and the variety of personal factors which can change how it interacts with your body, there is, unfortunately, no strict recommended dosage for CBD. This can make it hard to gauge how much CBD you should take, and in turn, this makes it hard to tell how many CBD gummies to eat.

While there isn’t a strict dosage guide for CBD, you can begin to estimate how much you should be taking by considering a few key factors.

Bodyweight

Bodyweight is perhaps the best way to begin estimating CBD dosages. Generally, the more bodyweight you have, the more tolerance your body will have to CBD, meaning a heavier person generally has to take more CBD than a lighter person to experience the same effects.

This provides a helpful baseline that is used for many first-time CBD users. One rule of thumb is that your starting dosage should be 0.25mg of CBD per pound of bodyweight, gradually increasing the dosage each time you take it until you find a CBD gummy dosage that gives the effects you want.

Body Chemistry

Body chemistry is harder to quantify than bodyweight but equally important. Biological factors like metabolism, liver function, and medical conditions can all affect the way that CBD interacts with your body.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for how this may affect your ideal dosage – it largely comes down to knowing your own body and being willing to work through some trial and error to find the correct dosage. As a general guide, think about your tolerance for other medications or even alcohol – if you have a generally high or low tolerance for these, it may be a similar story for CBD.

Reason for Taking CBD Gummies

Another factor in how much CBD you should take is the reason you’re taking it. Different doses can have very different effects – take the example above, where lower doses increase focus and concentration but higher doses can aid sleep through a sense of relaxation.

Depending on the reason you’re taking CBD, do some research into whether higher or lower doses are more effective for the effect you wish to achieve, and then test out different doses until you find the right one for you.

Desired Strength of CBD

The right CBD dosage doesn’t just vary person by person, it can also vary day by day. For example, someone taking CBD for pain relief from a chronic condition may take a certain dosage most of the time, but increase this dosage for days where their pain is particularly bad.

How Many CBD Gummies Should I Take?

Different CBD gummies can have differing CBD content – usually between 10 and 30mg per CBD gummy. You should always check how much CBD is in your gummies before you take them, as this can help you work out the dose you should be taking.

Compared to other CBD products, gummies are very easy to dose with – a view shared by William McAuliffe, founder of Hemptative, who says: “Gummies are not only convenient but also the easiest way to know exactly how many milligrams of CBD you are taking in a serving.”

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy to find the right dose in the first place. According to Leafly’s, neuroscientist Nick Jickomes says that current research isn’t advanced enough to recommend a specific dose for a specific condition to a particular patient: “You’re most likely going to have to get there through some trial-and-error.”

What’s more, Jickomes explains that even when you find the right dose, it won’t stay the right dose forever. “That’s because people’s physiologies change over time, including the ECS and how densely receptors are expressed in the brain and the body,” explains Jickomes.

“These things change over the lifetime of an individual, and so the optimal ratios and doses of these compounds, whatever they may be, are probably going to change as well.”

Essentially, finding the right amount of CBD gummies to take boils down to a lot of experimentation. It’s best to start with smaller doses of CBD and work upwards until you find a dose that delivers the right results for you and continues to experiment if your perfect dose stops being so perfect.

Potential side effects of taking too much CBD

Unlike other substances, it’s almost impossible to overdose on CBD since it takes an absolutely enormous amount to reach toxic levels – over 20,000mg, according to a 2011 study, which would mean eating between 660 and 1000 CBD gummies in a single sitting depending on their dosage – which would be an impressive feat in itself!

However, that’s not to say there aren’t any side effects to CBD at all. CBD is generally well handled in humans – but it can still sometimes lead to mild side effects, such as:

  • Tiredness – since the ECS manages your body’s sleeping patterns, overuse of CBD may interfere with your circadian rhythms, resulting in tiredness during the day.
  • Nausea/Diarrhea – CBD can sometimes cause nausea and diarrhea – generally, this only occurs if you take an especially large dose, however.
  • Dry mouth – the CB2 receptors that CBD interacts with regulating saliva production; occasionally this means your mouth won’t produce enough saliva, leaving you with a dry mouth.
  • Low blood sugar – CBD has been shown to lower blood pressure – this can be hazardous for people who already have low blood pressure.

In addition to these side effects, CBD may cause adverse effects when taken with prescription medication, especially blood thinners (as CBD can act as a blood thinner itself). If you are on any other medication, it may be best to consult a doctor before trying CBD.

Conclusion

Working out how many CBD gummies to take can be a tricky business, thanks to the lack of research into recommended dosages for different conditions and the variety of personal factors that can affect the way CBD works on our body.

However, through trial and error, you can eventually find the perfect dose for you – especially since CBD gummies make it easy to tell exactly how much CBD you’re taking. Work up from a small dose, and you could soon be enjoying the benefits of CBD gummies.
