UK-based department store giant “John Lewis” is launching the world’s first recyclable, sustainable king-size mattress filled with hemp made by bedding manufacturer Harrison Spinks. The 180-year-old company uses hemp instead of foam to fill the mattress and uses sheep’s wool from its farm to make it more sustainable.

The super king-size mattress from John Lewis and the Natural collection costs £1,199, however, a mattress for a double bed will cost £479 and a single bed costs £399.

Simon Spinks, the company’s managing director, said: A fully durable mattress is a world first. It is foam also glue-free and made entirely from biodegradable or recyclable materials.

A closer look at the recyclable mattress, which was developed without glue by Harrison Spinks engineers.

Harrison Spinks, who appeared in the BBC series Inside The Factory with Gregg Wallace, found finally a way to build bedding without using glue after years of development by his engineers.

In fact, it’s the world’s first circular mattress, which means that at the end of its life it can be deconstructed and recycled, or dismantled and turned into an entirely new product.

All the mattress fillings are grown on the company’s 120-hectare farm in Bolton Percy, North Yorkshire.

Simon explained: We bought the farm so that we could grow our natural mattress fillings, such as wool and hemp, to reduce the amount of synthetic material typically found in mattresses, which unfortunately ends up in landfills most of the time.

In fact , he decided to invest in hemp after a conversation over a beer.

I wanted to start growing hemp on the farm after a conversation with a farmer I met in the pub, after asking him what could be grown easily and quickly in the UK,” Simon revealed.

After doing some research, I also discovered the plant’s sustainability qualities and the quality of its growth for the environment. I planted some on the farm and we started using it as a filling for our mattresses.

And Simon swears it’s much better than cotton because it can absorb much more moisture. It also has environmental benefits, because, for every half hectare of commercially grown hemp, one tonne of carbon dioxide is absorbed. Simon estimates that the company saves 1300 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Harrison Spinks has strengthened its ecological reputation with its sustainable forest for wood. And Simon promises that the sustainable mattress does not compromise comfort. He said: “Believe it or not, the materials used make a more comfortable mattress. We would never make any technical development that would compromise the comfort of our mattresses, in fact, most of our developments have certainly improved the quality of the product.

While we were developing this mattress, we didn’t really know what the result would be in terms of comfort, but by removing the glue, we have considerably improved the spring unit, so you have the best of both worlds.

The durable mattress is already available and the fully recyclable mattress will be on sale later this year. The company has also been honored by the Royal Family for its groundbreaking work. It received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of the recyclable mattress.
