A study at the Tor Vergata University Study Centre in Rome indicates that cannabis can be useful in combating infertility, a problem that affects 15% of couples in the world.

Recent research by Italian investigators brings hope for all men who want to have a child and have problems. The study concludes that cannabis can improve men’s ability to conceive. According to the tests carried out, the use of certain types of cannabinoids and their combination with CB2 receptors . Can activate proteins linked to sperm production and thus increase the chances of procreation.

In fact, the research follows the line of recent studies on the medical indications for cannabis. The qualities of the active ingredients present in cannabis are recognized for the treatment of the effects of chemotherapy or palliative pain care, for instance Sativex, a drug indicated for multiple sclerosis patients.

Currently, this group of Italian scientists proposes to find the relationship between the endocannabinoid system present in the human body and the problem of infertility. An ailment that affects 15% of couples in the world, 40% of which is attributable to male causes such as oligospermia (insufficient sperm secretion) or azoospermia (low sperm level) .

They worked on the hypothesis that by activating the CB2 receptors . That it can be possible to increase and control male fertility since this system is involved in sperm formation. In the study, they used 3 groups of laboratory rats for 3 weeks.

According to the journal where the study published, The Journal of Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. The possibility of stimulating the endocannabinoid receptors that play a role in spermatogenesis (sperm production) is an innovative and promising idea . So that male infertility can be treated. So,the use of this substance will have a positive impact on fertility, embryo development, and health.

Despite hopes for the study and the data generated by the findings, this does not necessarily mean that cannabis helps to combat infertility, but some of the active ingredients of cannabis could be used in the future as a drug for treatment. In the same study, it is indicated that the effects could be negative depending on which endocannabinoid system receptors are activated.

The endocannabinoid system regulates sperm development

In Addition,Previous research has focused on the fact that the endocannabinoid system plays an important role in men’s reproductive health. Both in terms of testosterone and other hormones and in terms of sperm quantity and quality. However, the focus was only on the active ingredients that affect the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the human body. But, its part, Tor Vergata study sought to directly activate the second group of receptors.

Also, despite THC’s poor reputation in some academic circles, some scientists say there is no conclusive evidence that adult men who use cannabis have higher rates of infertility. This argument indicates that consumption may influence patients who have already had low sperm counts or developed tolerance to the hormonal effects of certain active ingredients.
