Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is one of the most disabling and sometimes painful sensorimotor disorders of the nervous system. Which in recent years has become more widely accepted as a clinical disorder with its distinct characteristics. Medical cannabis and restless legs.

Symptoms usually respond well to dopamine agonists, anticonvulsants or opiates. But a subset of patients remain refractory to medical treatment and/or report serious side effects. In fact recently, there have been reports of patients reporting remarkable and complete remission of RLS symptoms after cannabis use.

The antinociceptive effect of cannabis documented in many painful neurological conditions. And the potential benefit of cannabis use in patients with refractory RLS should, therefore, be questioned by robust clinical trials. Here we confirm and extend these results to more patients with RLS.

A French scientist, who has already presented 6 cases of successful self-medication of restless legs syndrome (RLS) with cannabis in 2017. Has written about 12 additional patients who reported using cannabis. All patients complained of severe to very severe symptoms of RLS . So after treated with one or more standard medications available with low or limited efficacy. The study is available by clicking on this link.

All but one patient (Patient 2) admitted total symptom relief after smoking cannabis, but none discontinued current RLS treatment primarily because of the illicit nature of cannabis use and concern about the potential risk of abuse and psychoactive effects.

The author add that the potential benefit of cannabis use in patients with refractory RLS should, therefore, challenge robust clinical trials.
