The active molecule of cannabis can infiltrate the central nervous system, where most molecules cannot go. This could be used to treat diseases such as schizophrenia or Alzheimer’s.

CBD to treat central nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer disease or schizophrenia

researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid are currently working on this therapeutic approach.

In the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics, they publish the results of their work on the value of CBD in delivering drugs to the brain.

Able to cross the blood-brain barrier

The central nervous system is protected by the blood-brain barrier: a layer of closely related cells that line the capillaries. It prevents unwanted substances from passing from the blood to the brain, but allows amino acids, glucose and some neurotransmitters, including CBD, to pass through.

A Trojan horse in the brain

Spanish researchers have tested the ability of cannabidiol to transport molecules capable of treating certain diseases of the nervous system.

The method of action used by the researchers is similar to that of a Trojan horse. So,they placed CBD on the surface of nano capsules, which could contain a drug.

Cannabidiol: multiple virtues?

By the end of 2017, researchers had already proven the value of CBD in the treatment of schizophrenia. After 6 weeks, the molecule reduced the number of hallucinations and improved cognitive performance. However, all these results need to be confirmed by larger studies.
